Volkswagen Golf (97 - 04)
It’s a huge testament to Volkswagen that this Golf, considered to be the weakest version they’ve produced, is still considered to be a reliable car. Still really popular and sells well in the used market nearly 17 years after its release. This fourth generation didn’t set the world on fire. At the time it was one of the best in its segment in terms of looks. It has the distinctive styling that holds well to this day. The interior looks and feels well built, and the quality of materials are robust and hard wearing, so it has aged well. Like all Golfs it is comfortable and spacious with enough room to take five. There’s good boot space too. It is a rock solid car to drive and well able for the rigours of Irish roads.
Look out for
• Known to suffer the odd electrical glitch; make sure everything works
What we like
• Probably the best all round car in its class
• It’s easy and enjoyable to drive. Great choice for learners
• Inexpensive to buy and to keep on the road
• The cabin is big enough to hold five passengers
• Has a reputation for quality and reliability
What we don't like
• Earlier models are disappointing in terms of standard kit
• Leg room in the back is not as generous as other cars in class
